Our History?

Since 1992, Dadaab has been a place of refuge for hundreds of thousands of people fleeing violence in Somalia and the wider East African region.

Despite the camp being a place of relative safety, the occupants of the camp face many serious challenges:

  • Lack of proper shelter / living accommodation (of particular  importance given the extreme weather and temperatures)
  • Hunger and malnutrition
  • Lack of medical facilities
  • Violence and lawlessness
  • Limited education
  • Very limited employment opportunities

The driving force and inspiration for the charity is Abdi Aden Khalif who arrived at the Dadaab Refugee camp in 1992 having fled Somalia with his family, aged 7.

There was no water and no food  he remembers.People were dying on the road; old people were being left behind. Abdi’s family made it to Dadaab and he remembers people searching for their relatives, trying to find out who were dead and who were alive. He spent the next 21 years living and surviving at the camp.

In 2002, Abdi was given the opportunity to access a distance learning diploma in Logistics because of the kind sponsorship of a donor in Salford, UK. The sponsor had donated £200 to fund the 12 month distance learning course that facilitated Abdi obtaining employment and providing for his family.

Abdi is passionate about others in the camp receiving the same opportunities as the one gifted to him in 2002.

Registered as a UK charity in April 2016 HELP Dadaab is a small but growing UK based charity that has a simple aim of to help the occupants of Dadaab in 3 ways  by providing education, shelter and access to medical facilities.

Help Daddab provides direct and practical assistance to individual beneficiaries living in the camp and focuses on 3 key areas:
